The tomato hornworm’s tail is dark blue-black instead of reddish, and it does not have a horn. The tail color and markings are what set the two apart. The tomato hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata) and the tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta) both appear to be similar in appearance.
